DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

History

The Department of Biotechnology offers B.Sc Biotechnology and M.Sc Biotechnology programmes. The Department was established in the year 2002 with a postgraduate programme and later undergraduate programme was introduced in the year 2004. Our Department has an intake of 50 students in the undergraduate programme and 26 students at the postgraduate level. The Department has successfully graduated 18 batches of postgraduate and 15 batches of undergraduate students.

The Department has qualified, hard working and dedicated faculty members. The faculty members regularly attend conferences and seminars. Apart from academics, our faculty members actively engage the students in various co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

The Department has well established laboratories with instrumentations. The Department keenly focuses on providing hands-on training for the students on various laboratory techniques. All the students were provided with sufficient laboratory equipment and they were motivated to create their own research ideas. The Department regularly organizes seminars and workshops for benefitting the students.

The Department has produced University rank holders including gold medalists. The Department is proud to produce many young talents who were awarded, including the recipient of the young scientist research award.

The Department has a good record for placement. Our alumni have got placed in various biomedical fields and they are placed as medical representatives, medical coders, lab technicians etc. and some of our alumni have got opportunities to promote their research ideas to the next level by doing Ph.D research programmes in reputed institutions.

Achievements

Young student scientist programme (YSSP)- 2019 organized by science department for government school students (9th passed out students belonging to Thirvallur and Vellore District. The programme was sponsored by TNSCST.
Our student D. Praveen Kumar has been selected for the participation in the NSS Republic Day Parade Camp 2022 organized at New Delhi in Jan, 2022.

Vision

Our vision is to produce proficient, skilled and qualified Bio-technologists who can work for various organizations / Industries such as medical and clinical lab technologist and technicians, R & D and process development scientists etc.
We are determined to play a strong academic foundation for our future biotechnologists who are the major contributors for the agricultural, industry and healthcare sector.

Mission

To impart basic knowledge and skills of various aspects of biotechnology.
To provide hands-on training for our students in various laboratory techniques.
To train the students to take up a wide variety of roles like researchers, academicians, consultants and entrepreneurs.

Programme Offered: B.Sc.BIOTECHNOLOGY

Program Objectives

PO 1:	The B.Sc program of Biotechnology of Jaya College of Arts and Science, Thiruniravur was started in the year 2004.
PO 2:	The practical syllabus is designed to enable the students to link and support with their theory background.
PO 3:	The syllabus imparts the knowledge of handling instruments
PO 4:	The programme provides knowledge to start own enterprises by students for their future development.
PO 5:	The students can understand the role of biotechnology in society, health related issues and environmental concerns.

Program Specific Outcomes

PSO 1:	The B.Sc program of Biotechnology of Jaya College of Arts and Science, Thiruniravur was started in the year 2004.
PSO 2:	The program aims to traine the students to develop global competience in the area of basic and applied biological sciences.
PSO 3:	Biotechnology program has the opportunities in healthcare sector, diagnostics, research, food technology, pharmaceutical industry and education
PSO 4:	It is an integrated science with interdisciplinary knowledge of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Plant and Animal Sciences, Environmental and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
PSO 5:	The subject knowledge of students are enhanced by using traditional and modern teaching methods
