                                 DEPARTMENT OF MicroBiology

History

The department of Microbiology was started with under graduate (B.Sc., microbiology) in the year 1994 and later Post Graduate in Applied Microbiology was established with 16 seats in 1997 and it has been grown up to 26 seats in the year 2001.

The immense support and guidance given by the management paved way for additional sections in B.Sc. Microbiology. The B.Sc. Microbiology was established with 2 sections in 2002 and 3 sections in 2004 by the mainstay provision of management. And around 150 students have studied every year.

The department has been offering also additional courses like DMLT, HACCP, food safety and control and mini projects for the students giving them a bright future before they complete degree in this college.

The department has been organizing various guest lectures, symposium, inter-collegiate competition every year and has organized national conference (biodegradation & bioremediation in 2009 & 2010) and carrier guidance programme for school students (2013 &2014).

Higher studies

Every year students pursued their higher education in various fields of microbiology in IBMS, Tharamani, Madras University- Guindy campus for PG and other research institutes for Ph.D & PDF. Most of them are placed well in reputed institutions with a sound package. The institutes are such as Cancer research institute, Govt. and private hospitals, laboratories, Food corporation of India (FCI),CLRI, food and beverage Industries, water companies, other universities, research institutes, self financing and aided colleges, e-publishing companies, etc. as a microbiologist, research asst.(JRF/SRF), food control officer, manager, HR, Quality controller, drug designer, Team leader, project asst., project manager, medical transcriptionist, lab asst., assistant and associate professors, professors, head of the dpt. etc.

To improve the talent of each and every student, the department organizes the following competition every week.

Vision
  • To be a world class hub for inter disciplinary education in Microbial pathogenesis, infectious diseases to improve human health.
Mission
  • To promote high impact education and innovation research in a diverse and exclusive environment by exploring fundamental questions in Microbiology and to translate discoveries into therapies against infectious diseases, disorders and cancers.
  • To provide outstanding education in Microbiology to undergraduate, graduate students in health sciences.

Program Objectives
PO 1:To create a centre of Academic Excellence in the field of education in Microbiology.
PO 2:Provide a sound academic background for overall development of personality for a successful career in Microbiology.
PO 3:Provide an environment that fosters continuous improvement and innovation in thesubject.
PO 4:Inculcate in student’s right skills oriented towards self-development.
PO 5:To inculcate in students the need for the value of dignity of labor and the attitude and proper community orientation and civic responsibilities in their outlook.
PO 6:Develop an orientation towards the society as responsible citizens for excellent academic program, involvement of students in day today management for specific duties.
Program Specific Outcomes
PSO 1:Students will be able to describe diversity of microorganisms, bacterial cell structure and function, microbial growth and metabolism, and the ways to control their growth by physical and chemical means.
PSO 2:Students will explain the role of microorganisms in food production and preservation, their ability to cause food-borne infections and demonstrate practical skills in fundamental microbiological techniques.
PSO 3:Students will demonstrate engagement in the Microbiology discipline through involvement in their post-graduation period, research or internship activities, and outreach their goals specific to microbiology.
