DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
History
The Department of Biotechnology offers B.Sc Biotechnology and M.Sc Biotechnology programmes. The Department was established in the year 2002 with a postgraduate programme and later undergraduate programme was introduced in the year 2004. Our Department has an intake of 50 students in the undergraduate programme and 26 students at the postgraduate level. The Department has successfully graduated 18 batches of postgraduate and 15 batches of undergraduate students.
The Department has qualified, hard working and dedicated faculty members. The faculty members regularly attend conferences and seminars. Apart from academics, our faculty members actively engage the students in various co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
The Department has well established laboratories with instrumentations. The Department keenly focuses on providing hands-on training for the students on various laboratory techniques. All the students were provided with sufficient laboratory equipment and they were motivated to create their own research ideas. The Department regularly organizes seminars and workshops for benefitting the students.
The Department has produced University rank holders including gold medalists. The Department is proud to produce many young talents who were awarded, including the recipient of the young scientist research award.
The Department has a good record for placement. Our alumni have got placed in various biomedical fields and they are placed as medical representatives, medical coders, lab technicians etc. and some of our alumni have got opportunities to promote their research ideas to the next level by doing Ph.D research programmes in reputed institutions.
Achievements
- Young student scientist programme (YSSP)- 2019 organized by science department for government school students (9th passed out students belonging to Thirvallur and Vellore District. The programme was sponsored by TNSCST.
- Our student D. Praveen Kumar has been selected for the participation in the NSS Republic Day Parade Camp 2022 organized at New Delhi in Jan, 2022.

Programme Offered: m.Sc.BIOTECHNOLOGY
Program Objectives
| PO 1: | Postgraduate students will be able to demonstrate and apply their knowledge of Cell biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Molecular Biology to solve the problem related to the field of biotechnology. |
| PO 2: | Students will be able to demonstrate and apply the principles of bioprocess engineering in the design and analysis |
| PO 3: | Gain fundamental knowledge in animal and Plant Biotechnology and their application. |
| PO 4: | Students will be able to understand various facts of molecular procedures and basics of genomics, proteomics and metabolomics that could be employed in early diagnosis and prognosis of human diseases |
| PO 5: | Students will be able to gain hands on training in Molecular Techniques. This experience could enable them to begin a carrier in industry that engages in genetic engineering as well as in research laboratories |
